From the December 1964 edition of Chain Store Age magazine, page 9 to be exact, is this beautiful photo of a store that Runchadrun had mentioned in my 1976 Safeway Map thread:

Apparently it was built as a different prototype in 1951, demolished only a decade later, and built into this unique take on the wavy-awning form:

That's definitely the store I was talking about. By the time it became a Vons the funky lampposts were gone but those hanging ball lights over the doors were still there.

This was a tiny, tiny store. I recall that it only had 4 or 5 aisles. Think of a small Marina store and cut it in half. It closed around 93 or 94 and was replaced with a much larger store on that lot and and adjoining lot facing Lincoln.

I found the LA Times article from 8/28/1952 about the grand opening of the original store. The article says it was 10,000 sqft
