The only thing I could find as far as Safeway in Indiana goes was an article from 1992 an independent grocery chain owned by Malone & Hyde/Fleming with 24 stores at that point and appears to have disappeared entirely by 1998...is it a mistake they made when writing (or citing something bad), or is there something about Safeway and Indiana that we don't know?The early favorite in the spring of 1998 was the Dutch giant Ahold, but by the autumn of the year it was California-based Safeway Inc. that succeeded in buying Dominick's at a price tag of $1.2 billion, as well as the assumption of $646.2 million in debt. Most likely the Preston-Safeway chain, based in Indianapolis, but with some stores in county seat towns within a serviceable radius of Indy like Bloomington and Terre Haute. They grew-up in Indianapolis and expanded by buying a lot of the Standard super markets operated by National Tea when National left the market around 1980. National's nearly new DC went to Marsh.
