Randomly was searching online trying to find photos of the Chestnut/Taylor Safeway that closed in the 80s, but happened upon this:

I've never seen an old photo of that Safeway and the Marina roof seems to suggest more of a 1960s remodel, which would not correctly fit the timeframe of the Potrero store (since it was White Front in the 1960s).

Is this even a photo of a Bay Area store at all?

Can't say where it is, but it is most definitely not either incarnation of the store at 16th and Potrero. The original Safeway at that location (where Ross is now) was not a marina, and as you say, the current store was carved out of what was originally White Front.

Out of curiosity, do you have any photos of the older 16th/Potrero store? I've been to the current one several times but didn't realize it had been elsewhere in the shopping center in the past.

I don't, unfortunately, which is surprising since it was my local. It opened in 1968 at the same time as the White Front. It relocated into the White Front space (which had most recently been a car showroom) in 1995 as part of an expansion and remodeling of the whole center.

That is the Safeway at 2020 Oregon St in Berkeley, now Berkeley Bowl. In the window reflection, you can see the Pay N Save across the street-a former Super S Drug (now a remodeled Walgreens).
