Correction on Alpha-Beta Monterey Park.

It was the Asian Supermarket just north of the Ralphs on the west side of Atlantic.. The Ralph's was actually a Hughes market. This Alpha Beta closed in the 80's right around the time Safeway was closed, and was vacant for years. The old tower where Alphie once was is still visible.

Color me surprised, but the Covina location on Citrus Ave. - that you mention as now being Bozzani Volvo? Well that must have been an Alpha Beta before I was born! (Well, you did say the list was from 1973; it must have relocated just about then...)

30 years ago, up until it was acquired by Ralph's, this very close-by Covina location was home to both Alpha Beta and Alphy's restaurant: 425 South Citrus Ave... It is now of course Ralph's and a Millee's restauraunt, respectively. So that can be added to the list - not to mention these...

Two former Alpha Beta's that are now 99-Cent Only stores:
Azusa - 307 N. Citrus Ave.
Covina - 321 N. Vincent Ave.

Former Skaggs Alpha Beta was later a Lucky, now Albertsons:
Claremont: 436 W. Auto Center Drive

Most recently a Ralph's, now just closed (I think):
Claremont: 835 W. Foothill Blvd.

And this Steinmart location was previously an Alpha Beta:
La Verne: 1375 Foothill Blvd.

By the way... the former Glendora location, which the list shows as being on Alosta Ave. but cited as "Old Rt. 66" - well, its address actually *is* on Route 66. Glendora renamed Alosta Ave. back to Route 66 about 5 years ago.

I can confirm that as well. I still remember it when it was an Alpha Beta. If there's still a Ralphs over there it would be at the location they bought from Market Basket in the early 1980's (unless they have constructed a new store since then).

The store on El Cajon Blvd. in San Diego was an old Alpha Beta but not a Marina type. It was more typical of the barrel roofs of 1930's & 1940's construction.

The property where Gelson's is located in Calabasas once had an Alpha Beta on it. Gelson's bought the property in foreclosure and then evicted everyone (including Alpha Beta) from the property. They tore down the entire shopping center and built 'Gelson's Village' in the mid 90's. It's a very cool store inside with natural skylights and very interesting signage.

A little bit of a techicality coming into play: I know that parts of old Route 66 (Alosta and Foothill) do carry the US highway signs, and the former Alosta Avenue itself is now a street with the Route 66 name (and for that matter all of that route has been California State Route 66 for years), but as for the US 66 designation, the federal highway was decomissioned officially in 1985.

The Alpha Beta in Covina at 626 South Citrus is on the west side of the street and is now a Ralphs. This location will be closing within the year to be replaced with a new store on Citrus and Workman.

You can still see the Alpha-Beta labelscar on the building today.

I can confirm that as well. I still remember it when it was an Alpha Beta. If there's still a Ralphs over there it would be at the location they bought from Market Basket in the early 1980's (unless they have constructed a new store since then).

Actually the Market Basket was located on the south end of Monterey Park.

Monterey Park, at one point, had 5 supermarkets on Atlantic Blvd:
(From North to South):

Alpha Beta (NW Corner Emerson/Atlantic) - closed 80's, now Asian Supermarket
Hughes (SE Corner Atlantic/Emerson) - converted to Ralphs in the 90's.
Safeway (NE Corner Atlantic/Garfield) - closed in 1986, now 99 Ranch Market
Market Basket (Atlantic Blvd between Floral Dr and Riggin St) - now subdivided into shops and a Blockbuster Video
Albertsons (NE Corner Atlantic Bl and Riggin St) - closed in the early 90's, demolished, and a Ralphs opened in its place.

Regarding the two previous posts:

626 South Citrus is on the east side of the street. According to the initial posts, this is now a Volvo dealer. If an Alpha Beta was ever located there, I never knew it; it had to have been before my time.

The former Covina Alpha Beta that is now a Ralph's (that Jeff mentioned) is the one I mentioned in my previous post. It's at 425 S. Citrus Avenue.

For the northern california locations, there's also a former Alpha Beta that closed in August as Albertson's covered in Charles Hathaway's site at 1409 Bird ave. in San Jose.

I've read that one of the owners of Zanotto's, a small, independent upscale chain, has been in serious talks with the landlord about opening a store there, and Zanotto's has placed a bid on the store, and if all goes well could open as early as November.
