A store in London with lettering more like the 1990s US lettering, 1970s front roofline style. I wonder if Morrisons held on to this location.

Here's a thread on a Dallas website about a Safeway on old US 80:

http://www.dallashistory.org/cgi-bin/we ... read=28895

Here's a Googlemaps overhead shot of the site, 641 Fort Worth Avenue (Ft. Worth Avenue/old US 80 is the road that cuts diagonally here) - according to that thread, the Safeway is on the south side of the street, currently in use as a postal building.

http://img92.imageshack.us/img92/8236/s ... avehs3.jpg

Another Dallas area store was located in this shopping center at Macarthur and Highway 183 in Irving, TX, though from this post at the Dallas History site, this may not be the original building...

http://www.dallashistory.org/cgi-bin/we ... read=54845

the googlemaps shot:

http://img133.imageshack.us/img133/6010 ... gtxft6.jpg

Former marina now operating as Whole Foods at Greenville and Belmont in Dallas, another googlemaps shot:

http://www.dallashistory.org/cgi-bin/we ... read=44069

Image

Possible Safeway site somewhere around here on Knox Street in Dallas; the post here doesn't make the location clear, but does mention a nearby Borders (which the arrow in this googlemap shot is pointing at):

http://www.dallashistory.org/cgi-bin/we ... read=31349

http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/5360/swyknoxwq6.jpg

Apparently one Safeway was converted to an amusement center...

http://www.dallashistory.org/cgi-bin/we ... read=31031

However, that Lochwood Mall, at Garland and Jupiter, has since been replaced with something more akin to a strip mall or power center, which google has labeled "White Rock Marketplace":

http://img179.imageshack.us/img179/4571/lochwoodqc8.jpg

Up in the suburb of Plano, a former Marina safeway at 18th and K, as seen overhead from google:

http://www.dallashistory.org/cgi-bin/we ... s;read=673
When my parents and I were still living in Plano (late 60s to '71) there was a Skillern's at Plano North shopping center at 18th and K next to the first (dome style, like Preston-Royal) Safeway in Plano.
Image

I think this is the current tenant, from checking Google's business search in the area:
Family Foods of Plano
1804 K Ave, Plano, TX
Apparently a Skillern's Drugs operated next to that 18th/K marina - possible former Super S?

http://www.dallashistory.org/cgi-bin/we ... ;read=7105

As for Preston Royal, that area in Dallas itself consists of two shopping centers, one on the southeast quadrant of the Preston/Royal intersection (Preston Royal Plaza) and one taking the two north quadrants (Preston Royal Center). The first google photo is from the northwest quadrant, the second is on the southeast - I'm not sure which one is the actual marina.

http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/5921/swypr1us5.jpg
http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/1979/swypr2vi7.jpg

Someone mentions a store at Junius Street just north of Munger Boulevard in Dallas, near a playground...

http://www.dallashistory.org/cgi-bin/we ... read=10244

I wonder if it is this building pictured on google, a block north of Munger:

Image

http://www.dallashistory.org/cgi-bin/we ... read=48182 talks about a Safeway location that is now the Big Lots on 2865 Valley View in Farmers Branch, TX:

http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/9927 ... nchqn3.jpg

Note from the google shot, the ex-Safeway is the building on the right (the building on the bottom left is the McDonalds, and I think the building on the top left is the theater mentioned in that Dallas History thread)

---

Former Piggly Wiggly, had become Safeway by the end of World War 2.

http://www.dallashistory.org/cgi-bin/we ... read=27590

Image

Former restaurant site which became a Safeway in the 1960s, on 117 South Fitzhugh in Dallas. Not clear what this is now, but from this google shot, the building remains.

http://www.dallashistory.org/cgi-bin/we ... read=22817

http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/2176 ... ughez5.jpg

Former Safeway, currently Tower Records, 3707 Lemmon. This google shot shows a full parking lot, but I wonder what'll happen to the site once Tower's liquidation is complete...

In the Des Moines thread from many months ago, several Safeway marina locations were mentioned, of which a few had become Hy-Vee stores...

http://www.groceteria.com/board/viewtopic.php?t=187

Here's a googlemaps shot of one marina, now operating as Hy-Vee at 4100 University Avenue, Des Moines, IA 50311 -

HA! You can actually see my house in that image.

I walked over there this morning to give you all a better view. Here's what the front of the store looks like today...

Image

Here's a shot of the interior via the pharmacy drive-up window. The aisles are numbered as "streets" after the neighborhood...

Image

The west and rear sides of the building are relatively untouched from its Safeway days.

After Safeway left the market, Tait's Supervalu took over and ran it basically untouched for years. They remodeled the interior in the early 1990's with minor changes to the building's face. When Hy-Vee purchased it around 2000, they completely redesigned the front and walled off the produce section, which was turned into the wine and spirits section, though it's still accessed from inside the store.

Hy-Vee's format for this store is unique in that it's really a neighborhood market as much as a drug store. It has a small but complete grocery line including meat (pre-packaged from another store), produce, and frozen foods sections. They decided to try this idea to fit the unique neighborhood demographics, and it's worked so well that the "grocery" aspect of the business has been expanded since they started.

The store is part of the Uptown Shopping Center, an old but still successful strip mall with mostly local businesses, supported by an active neighborhood. You know all those "mixed use" retail developments with shopping, business, and retail all in the same place that are popping up across the country? They're trying to mimmick the feel that this neighborhood never lost in the first place.

A store which has been discussed here on this board before: the Victoria/Chapala gable ex-Safeway, now Vons, in Santa Barbara.

http://www.santabarbara.com/dining/revi ... urant=1247

This 1970s Goleta Vons has a sign space area on the front that reminds me of a few Norcal Safeways, in particular the Capitol Avenue location in San Jose, and the Pacifica location that later became Lucky and now Albertsons...

http://www.santabarbara.com/dining/revi ... urant=1252

Here's a Vons gable, but not sure where it is:

I don't know where the gable store is. But the second Vons (the one underneath the gable on that page) is the Vons Food & Drug at Sunset & Virgil in Los Angeles. It has since been completely remodled inside and out and is a very successful store for the company.

Former Safeway, later Homeland, in Alva, Oklahoma. Closed by 2002.

http://outdoors.webshots.com/photo/1037 ... 1475BApkQs

Several Oklahoma area locations are mentioned in this:

http://www.nwosu.edu/pubrel/2006-2007/belcher.htm
Gene worked for Safeway in Alva, Watonga, El Reno and Cheyenne before ...
http://www.bassconstruction.net/AllCombined.doc mentions a Safeway converted to United in 1998 in Lawton. From Google, apparently the United Supermarket in that city is at 5324 NW Cache Rd. However, Googlemaps doesn't have a close zoom level there...Live Local does have a direct (but not birdseye) overhead at a better scale:

Pasadena - East Colorado and Sierra Madre. Never a Marina or Gable, but built in the 70's I'm guessing (since its on the map Chris posted).

From the article on the same page, "Safeway, Jordano's open prestige units in Santa Barbara":
The Safeway market at Chapala and Victoria Streets, has been designed to conform with the Spanish-Colonial architecture of the city. However, the real attraction, and one that has drawn architects from locations throughout the West, is an exterior wall made up of murals. The murals, in six panels, relate the history of Santa Barbara from pre-Conquest days. Each panel is 13 feet high and 18 feet wide.
---

Turns out the Blackfen, UK gable, which I had posted a 1986 photo of earlier in this thread:

stayed Safeway even into at least 2001.

Note that the UK Safeway sign used here is slightly different from the original letter-plate location, which has been converted into four windows (with the middle three plates being obscured by the new sign).

I may have a picture of the Fort Dodge building when it was operating as a Hy-Vee. I'll have to check when I get back home. I knew it was a Safeway at one point, but it doesn't look like any Safeway design I've seen.

(EDIT: If I do, I can't find it).

The Fareway noted in the article is operating out of an old Marina. The only modification to the exterior when I lived up there (1991) was the replacement of the the "S A F E W A Y" letters on the glass to "F A R E W A Y" using Fareway's font. The interior, of course, was all white like all Fareways.
