In 1980 Trizec Corp., Toronto, Canada, acquired the shopping center interests of developer Ernest M. Hahn, who had developed many leading major shopping center, especially in California.

So it seems that the Hahn company might have planned Fashion Island, but did not end up operating it. The mall opened in either 1980 or 1981.

It seems as if the Hahn company had at least a limited stake in the shopping center throughout its life (which meant a stake in its legal woes) as evidenced by these articles;

Hi, new person here. I was just looking up info on Fashion Island for some reason and came across this discussion.

I was a little stunned to discover that I work only minutes away from the old Fashion Island mall. :D

It's funny because when I was a senior in high school (15 years back), we came to the Fashion Island ICe Skating Rink for a senior trip. However, I did not remember the area well and did not realize that I was working near the old Rink.

I did go to the Caltrans website, and notified them of some needed repairs. I also put in a query about the exit sign on 101, but the priority rating on that email has got to be a .5 on a scale of 10. But I still think that sign was changed...

I made a mistake here; according to Wikipedia, and a blog on Malls Of America, this Liberty House opened with the rest of the mall in 1981, and actually lasted until April 1987, well after all of the other California Liberty House stores were closed or sold, due to the lease that they held on this location. It was considered a branch of their Honolulu division when it was the only California location left.

i used to work at the round table in fashion island mall, we called it "fascist island" back then. the restaurant wasn't outside but down towards the lonely side of the mall back when red robin was also in the mall...general cinemas recruited me the same year, probably 1985...i watched the mall's decline and left the country in 1988 ~ 2002, never to see the mall again...i did enjoy some of the stores like "games & things" and the arcade "the goldmine", was also a lot of fun in the eighties...would love to see photos if anyone has any and/or an old directory for hillsdale at around the same time....[/img]

Weird about Fashion Island Mall: while living in San Mateo ca. 1979-80 (and a few months in 1984) the place hardly rings a bell. Note I am perplexed since I drove a taxi during the above times. Hillsdale; OTOH, is/was quite familiar to me----------it was being renovated then.
