The DeMoulas/Market Basket distinction was part of the long-running family feud. DeMoulas was the original company that was owned by both sides of the bickering family, while Market Basket was owned solely by Mike Demoulas (the father of "Arthur T") and his side of the family. One of the allegations during the trials in the 90s where the "Arthur S" side of the family got control of the company was that that Mike (who ran both companies) had run down the value of DeMoulas stock by transferring assets to Market Basket and other entities owned by his side of the family. The chains were merged by court order in 1997.
