I also found a photo of this now-demolished Safeway in The San Francisco Examiner archives, from April 1989. A new six-story building housing Safeway and apartments above was being proposed. Love that embedded circle 'S':

This 15,750 square foot supermarket opened in October 1954, closed in 1993, and was demolished in 1999. Albertson's ended up building a store on this site (planned by Lucky before the acquisition), after Safeway had given up on the proposed redevelopment and closed the store instead.

Thanks for finding that. A friend of mine told me it was a Safeway but I could never find proof. Somewhere else on this board it's mentioned that Lucky developed the property and it was operated by Albertsons. Then it was divided between CVS and Fresh & Easy.

Safeway signed a lease for the property in 2017. The project was approved in July 2019 but I'm not sure what has happened since then. They are supposed to be opening it as an Andronico's Community Market.

You're welcome klkla. A long time ago, Groceteria had photos of that Safeway when it was abandoned. Well, Andronico's will be moving in after all!
