Here's another lovely photo I was able to track down, this time through microfilm. The Loblaws (and Kmart) on 1101 Arthur Street West, upon opening in March 1972:

This had to have been one of the very last Loblaws stores that opened prior to the advent of the chain's still-current "L" logo. The Kmart is now a Wal-Mart and the Loblaws is now a Metro, but both are still fairly recognizable.

Never saw wood shingles on a Loblaws facade. Was (or is) that common or just a one-off?

I don't know. This was a mall store with a unified facade, and I assume that the look was dictated by the developer.

And here's something great I randomly stumbled upon today...

A picture of the inside of the Safeway marina on 70 Court St N, taken in 1985 before the building was false-fronted and drop-ceilinged! (It's a Fresh Co now.) Sigh...

(Edit: Or maybe not. Taking a close look at the photo, the products on display look more modern than 1985, and a "must have been born in 1982 or earlier" sign is visible by the tobacco display, which tells me it was taken in 2000. The window configuration also doesn't match the actual Court Street Safeway, so it's a mislabelled picture of a different store. Oh well...)

Probably a repurposed picture, as Marlboro isn't quite the killer brand in Canada it is in the US.
