Weird former Kroger store in Houston

This is a former Kroger store near a distinctive Sears store in Houston (1950s neon sign), confirmed via directory circa 1991 (it likely closed in the 1990s when Kroger rebuilt a former Safeway it acquired down the street). It doesn't look like a Kroger store, I'll grant you that, but it does have the distinctive "six HVAC units" in a corner of the building. What type of prototype is this? Was it just a weird Family Center or one of a kind?

From the shape, the front entrance placement, etc., it really looks almost like a 1970s superstore that got an exterior remodeling/recladding, maybe in the 1980s. Is that a possibility?

The store was built in 1978 and sold in 1998, which sounds right as that was the time when their acquired Safeway/AppleTree was knocked down for a Signature store, though I think the Signature store is slightly newer.

The roof may have been added on as a mock Greenhouse during the 1980s.
