Former Albertsons stores in the NW area of Phoenix

Post by TonyG » 23 Dec 2012 20:48

As I have been spending more time in the NW Area of Phoenix (north of Northern Ave, West of 19th Ave. and South and East of Loop 101) I've noticed that this area contains 6 former Albertsons stores. 3 of the 6 are fully abandoned (except for the month of October) while 2 of the 6 are partially occupied and 1 is fully occupied. What is also interesting is that (after looking at aerial photography) it seems that a maximum of 3 of the 5 were ever open at the same time.

The 6 Stores are as follows

2814 West Bell Road Phoenix, AZ 85053 (Bell Rd. and 29th Ave) (this store appears to have been built around 1990 and closed in 2000/2001, it is now the home of the 13th Floor Haunted House and vacant most of the rest of the year) (This location appears to have been replaced by a store 1.75 Miles west at 43rd. Ave and Bell Rd)

5802 W Olive Ave Glendale, AZ 85302 (59th Ave and Olive) (this store appears to have been built around 2003/2004 and closed in the 2006 round of closures after becoming Albertsons LLC, so it was only open for 3-4 years, it is now a DD's Discounts)

8110 W Peoria Ave #110, Peoria, AZ 85345 (Peoria Ave and 83rd Ave) (this store appears to have been built around 1990 and closed in 2000/2001 when it was replaced by a newer Albertsons at 75th Ave. and Cactus which is 1 mile east and 1 mile north of this location, it was supposed to be transformed into something called the Zocalo Mall but that project never got off the ground)

1849 W Greenway Pkwy, Phoenix, AZ 85023 (Greenway and 19th Avenue) (this store appears to have been built around 2000/2001 as an ABCO Foods Desert Market and became an Albertsons sometime afterwards as ABCO went under around 2001, as an Albertsons it closed in the 2008 round of closures after becoming Albertsons LLC, this location is now vacant)

4240 W Bell Rd, Glendale, AZ 85308 (Bell Rd. and 43rd Ave) (this store appears to have been built around 2000/2001 and closed in the 2008 round of closures after becoming Albertsons LLC, it was the other of the 2 stores that replaced the location at Bell Rd. and 29th Ave, this location has been subdivided into 3 parcels a Fresh and Easy (since closed), a 99 Cents Only Store (still open), and a vacant 3rd parcel next to where the Garden Center was)

7575 West Cactus Road, Peoria, AZ 85381 (Cactus Rd and 75th Ave) (this store appears to have been built around 2000/2001 and closed sometime in 2007/2008, it had a fuel station which since became a Shell, 2/3 of the store is now a Lee Lee Asian Market with the remaining 1/3 nearest to the garden center vacant).

There are two remaining stores in this area:

20255 N 59th Avenue Glendale, AZ 85308 (59th Ave and Loop 101) (this store appears to have been built in the mid 1990s)

5040 W. Cactus, Glendale, AZ 85304 (51st Ave and Cactus) (this store appears to have been built in 1990 along with the closed stores at 83rd Ave and Peoria and 29th Ave and Bell Rd)

What is interesting about all of this is how Albertsons closed 2 stores after only 10/11 years of operation and proceeded to close their replacements within 7/8 years. What is also interesting is that the 2 "replacement" stores both had garden centers and are in considerably better locations than the 2 closed stores (The 83rd Ave and Peoria store is next to an abandoned Walmart, at a strange intersection with a railroad crossing to access the center from the south. While not present at the time the store was open, there is a massive Walmart Supercenter just south and east of this store) (The 29th Ave and Bell store has next to no visibility from the main road and is located in a mostly abandoned shopping center, it used to be located next to a Sam's Club but Sam's moved to 15th Ave and Bell Rd). Both of the replacement stores are also across the street from Fry's Supermarkets. The store at 59th Ave and Olive was a mile away from a Fry's and Safeway (at 51st Ave and Olive, there is also now a Wal Mart Neighborhood Market at that intersection as well).

Just want to update.

The former Albertsons Express fuel center at the former Albertsons at 7575 W Cactus Rd in Peoria that then became a Shell and then closed has found a new lease on life. This store was closed and became Lee Lee Oriental Market before Albertsons LLC sold the fuel centers to Valero. I drove by it today and there are signs out front that say that it will be a Fry's fuel center (there is a Fry's across 75th Avenue from the former Albertsons).

As a vendor,an employee of a Major Valley Retail Chain, and a long time follower of this blog, I enjoy seeing posts about Phoenix area retail on here. I wish I had more time to devote to my "quirky retail intrests." Still, I plan on trying to make an effort to post more comments, and possibly pictures in the near future. :)
