Hi Gang,

Does anyone know about any Safeways in the Portland/Vancouver area that have been rebuilt on the same site? I know of quite a few:

In Milwaukie, a Marina Safeway was built on the same site of a "shoebox" Safeway. This occurred in 1967 at the location of 10554 SE Main Street in Milwaukie. The store originally opened in 1951 (in the "shoebox" architecture).

In NE Portland during 1988-89, a Marina Safeway built circa 1965 was demolished to make way for a larger "Marketplace" store. The location was at 5920 NE Union Avenue (now Martin Luther King Blvd).

In SE Portland, a 1940s-era Safeway on 39th & Powell was demolished circa 1973 to make way for a larger Safeway. It was demolished and rebuilt once again throughout the year 2000, and the building today, with in-garage parking, is almost as tall as a skyscraper.

But, were there any 1950s-60s Safeways in the Portland/Vancouver area (Marinas or otherwise) that have been rebuilt between 1978 and 1982 as "Super Stores"?

And to answer the first question,
I know that the Safeway near the Lloyd Center in Portland was demolished and rebuilt on the same site.

I'll bet that the Lloyd Center Safeway (the original version) at 1100 NE Broadway, was built in the "Marina" architecture when it opened in 1960.

The question that comes to me is if your timeline for the use of "Super Store" in Safeway branding is accurate. I swear the Canyon Rd Safeway (a large footprint Marina) was a called a Super Store (big letters in the windows) before my family moved out in 1976.

Aside from that, I can contribute the Cedar Mill store at the Sunset "Mall" (strip center), which was gutted in the late 90's and a new modern "Food & Drug" built. The northwest corner of the new store may or may not include the northwest corner walls of the old store. I can't confirm when the store opened, but it was likely with the rest of the mall in 1968.

I think the Cedar Hills store was shut down at the same time the new Cedar Mill store opened. Cedar Hills re-opened as a small Thriftway after an extensive remodel. That was short-lived. It was a Big Lots last time I was out there.

Keep an eye on the Safeway on the SW corner of SE 82nd Avenue and Burnside. This store is slated for a big remodel - a much needed one. As far as I know this store has been here for a long time, at least the late 50's. Homes were bulldozed for this beauty.

That store opened on October 27, 1967.
