Former Arby's locations

Post by Dean »

The Arby's @ 1061 Whittier Blvd., La Habra CA recently closed...after probably ~40yrs.

Surprisingly, it did not sit too long.

It is now CHOP TERIYAKI.

While I don't have specific addresses, I have noticed a few very recognizable former Arby's that have closed in the Portland, OR/Vancouver, WA area.

The in-mall Arby's at Briarwood Mall in Ann Arbor, Michigan has closed as well.

One of the Arby's in Hemet, CA recently closed after being open for about 20 years.

This location was closed from about 95 to 96 or so after a garbage truck hit the gas main and destroyed the back 3/4 of the building. It originally had a very modern (for the early 90's) interior design with peach colored neon lighting twisted into different art peices all over the interior. The place got a really cheap looking design when they rebuilt. The location used to be pretty busy but in the last year or so there was hardly anyone there even at lunch. Often you could see the employees just sitting around in the dining room waiting for someone to come in. There is an Arby's on the West side of Hemet on the same street, and I always see some cars out there, so hopefully we aren't left without an Arby's.

Off topic, but in the same center as this recently closed Arby's, is a local burger/mexican fast food place called "Steve's Burger" (similar to Farmer Boys and the Gus Jr chains) that was originally a Green Burrito. Like most former GB's, the interior is still more or less intact from the GB days.

Arby's has been kind of in flux lately. It seems like every time one opens up, another one closes. They closed the one here in Oscoda, MI on Halloween 2007, almost exactly 20 years after it opened. It's now a coffee shop.

Strangely, our Arby's used a building style I've seen nowhere else: Here's a picture I took not long after the closing.

The Chicago franchisee (one of them) is Lunan Corp who also franchises most Arbys in Reno and Las Vegas, NV. They have recently closed three locations up here in Reno area, and are down to just three. Two were older (needed remodels), but one was less than 10 years old. The remaining locations are newer.

The Arby's near me in eastern Sacramento closed about a year ago under rather odd circumstances (seems to have been a lost-their-lease situation).

And the Kingston one just re-opened within the last month (or so) ... as a Popeye's chicken.

Interesting. The former Arby's in Wappinger Falls is to become a Nathan's Famous. Not sure if Arthur Treacher's combo is in the gameplan.

Alosta Ave near Citrus Ave near the Azusa/Glendora border across the street from Azusa Pacific University recently closed (I think it was in the middle of this past summer). This location had the large sign "Arbys Roast Beef is Delicious). I have a picture of that sign on one of my old cell phone cameras. I bought a lunch there once.

I've seen that building style a few times in Michigan - for example, downtown Lansing at Oakland & Cedar, and the Sault Ste. Marie store (built 1993-ish). Sometimes the part above the windows is painted red. Speaking of Sault Ste. Marie, that was the only Arby's left in the Upper Peninsula from Marquette's closure in the late 90s until Escanaba opened in 2006. Now there's 5 and more are allegedly coming.

In west Michigan, however, they seem to be on the decline. Hastings (911 W. State St.) and Grand Rapids (850 28th St. SE) both closed in the past few years, and it seems bizarre that cities as large as Benton Harbor no longer have an Arby's.

The Arby's in Ankeny, IA has this design (sans pillars these days anyway).
