King Road Thriftway, 1990

Post by StoreLiker2006 »

Hi,

Attached is a picture of the Thriftway on King Road (4242 S.E. King Rd. in Milwaukie, OR). Note the KFC (now gone) in the distance.

This Thriftway was previously Dieringer's Center from 1959 to 1969, Disco Mart from 1969 to 1979 and Food Warehouse from 1979 to 1989. After 1993, Dieringer's switched ad cooperatives from Thriftway to IGA; that affair lasted two years, becoming King Road Foods in 1995. King Road Super Center was finally demolished in 2004, and became a Safeway, which officially opened in March 2007.

This photo was taken during the summer of 1990, which of course means the KFC seen here still has traces of old and new: the bucket sign is the older one dating from the earlier '70s (note the Colonel's face is still colored), while the signage below dates from 1978 or later. The roof type on the building also appears to be of the '70s style.

Don't forget the now-gone First Interstate Bank sign in that picture too.
