Tastee-Freez

So the brand is still around and owned by the same franchisor that owns the California Wienerschnitzels (never seen one go out of business until this week), but what happened that caused the implosion of the chain in the 80's? They were everywhere! Too many locations?

And I've seen some of them converted to the weirdest things, like a karate school.

You are killing me!

I HONESTLY had just thought of the chain yesterday, as I believe there used to be a site on Waterman Avenue in San Bernardino. Drove by yesterday, and I think it was torn down.

Evidently, the chain still exists:

Their site with pictures:

Typical site most remember:

In addition to the Waterman Avenue San Bernardino CA location (that I think is gone), I recall the following:

Hacienda Heights/City of Industry CA
Near Hacienda Boulevard and Gale Avenue. Behind the Thriftimart/Lucky/Albertsons, now 99 Cent Only Stores. Site is now a Mexican Restaurant.

La Habra CA
On Harbor Boulevard, just below Central Avenue/La Habra Boulevard. Not sure if still standing. Jeff?!

I'm not sure.

There is the famous Vegetarian Tastee in Covina on Citrus and Covina Blvd.

The (former) Tastee Freeze in what's now the K-Mart plaza at 550 Camino de Estrella in San Clemente was a bank the last time I saw it. This former TF was an early tenant in this center, which was built around 1972.

Oddly enough in that center, the former BofA site in the SW corner is now a Kragen. So, hamburger stand to bank, bank to auto parts store.

The K-Mart started life as a W.T. Grant and the large space next to that started life as an Alpha-Beta.

There's a pristine old Tastee Freez in Davenport, Iowa on Rockingham Rd that still operates seasonally.

The Tastee Freez that was located on Hamner Avenue in Norco (between Second and Third Street) is gone. I think the building was torn down, and replaced by a car dealership.

The distinctive TF building is still on the east side of Harbor, about a block south of La Habra.
I think it's now a burger place - Volcano Burger?

That's probably the Hamburger Stand (another Wienerschnitzel chain) on S Broadway, which is a co-branded Tastee-Freez.

It's actually an original Wienerschnitzel drive-thru A-frame, and the Tastee-Freez menu was added shortly before Wienerschnitzel purchased Tastee-Freez (they tried out the brand in the Denver Hamburger Stand locations before committing.)

It's at 3400 S Broadway for anybody looking to Street View it...

One that was still open in Oct. 2009 is in Madison, VA along US 29, pictured from a trip coming back from Charlottesville. Needed a wider angled lens camera, to have gotten much better of a shot I would have been in the road.

We actually got a few newly opened ones in Michigan in the 1990s and 2000s, all in weird locations:

* A BP station in Hillman. The station opened with just Subway, but they tacked on A&W and Tastee Freez behind it. Neither lasted long, and I think there's a deli taking up that area.

* A combination Tastee Freez/Blimpie in Kalkaska, also open for only a couple years. It later became a pizza place.

* A strip mall location in inner city Detroit (2002-2004).

* Another one in a BP in Houghton Lake. Also closed in 2004.

There is still one in Anchorage, at the corner of Raspberry and Jewel Lake.

There was one by our house on the corner of Brookhurst & La Palma in Anaheim. Also on the corner of Ball & State Collage. Don't know if they are still there.
