Safeway UK Video on YouTube

Post by Groceteria »

Sent to me via email: an interesting collection of still photos dating as far back as the 1960s set to the "Everything you want from a store" jingle:

I noticed in one of the photos (of the woman reading a magazine) that the deli sign in the background reads "Appetizing Deli". Would Safeway have still used that spelling in the UK, where it should have been spelled "Appetising Deli"?

That was a UK store, specifically Petts Wood in London. The woman in the photo is Hannah Gordon, who appeared in Safeway UK ads in the 1980s. This info is from the guy who put together the video, and worked for Safeway at the time.

I assume they just patiently coped with the Americanized (Americanised?) spelling.

I'm guessing Safeway has learned their lesson. The new Vons here in Chula Vista (of all places) looks like they got a sign shipment intended for Canadian stores... their self check-out lanes accept "cheques".

Since the wonderful Safeway jingle music is on this page, I thought I would give you ALL the words to it!

"We work a little harder. We go a little farther. We give a little extra. We care a little more. We don't do it because we have to. We do it because we can do, that little extra effort that makes every Safeway store!!!! Safeway, everything you want from a store and a little bit more and a little bit more and a little bit more!!! Safeway.....Everything you want from a store and a little bit mooooore!!!!"

1980s Safeway Television Advertisements - United Kingdom

Post by Jason B. »

A collection of 1980s Safeway television advertisements from the United Kingdom has been posted to YouTube. See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDHHfQiIAz8 They are from the "Safeway ... everything you want from a store and a little bit more" advertising campaign, which also was used in the U.S.A.

Around 1:46, a television spot refers to prices in pence, which confirms the U.K.-origin of these ads. "Be-Ro" brand flour is promoted. "Safeway dried fruit" likely was not a private label item in the U.S. stores. (Perhaps these ingredients were combined to bake hot cross buns?)

One YouTube comment states that the first television advertisement likely was filmed at the Herne Bay store (a coastal community north of Canterbury). A library in the Kent area of England has an eight-page booklet about the Herne Bay Safeway store. See: https://kent.spydus.co.uk/cgi-bin/spydu ... 28927583,1

As in one of the photos posted in the comments above, Safeway employees are wearing white shirts and black bow ties in these television spots. That is a wonderful touch of English formality and might be a vestige of the days when well-dressed grocery store clerks assembled orders for customers (before "self-service" stores became prevalent).

Did BBC Television carry television advertisements in the 1980s? Maybe they ran on "ITV" and/or "Channel 4"?
