Contractors Warehouse/HDSupply, Pomona CA

Post by luckysaver »

Anybody remember Contractors Warehouse? They sold building material/hardware products is an open-to-the-public Home Depot style store. The Pomona location (currently HD Supply) is on Mission Blvd at the 71 Freeway.

HD Supply is a chain of specialty hardware stores that used to be part of Home Depot until a couple of years ago when Home Depot sold this business to an investment holding company.

Adjacent to HD Supply is the anchor to a shopping center where the sign simply reads

"COUNTY OF LOS ANGELES"

This is the regional offices of the Probation and Social Services offices. This storefront anchor appears to have been a former supermarket. According to the Board of Supervisors' lease agreement, the county has been leasing this "supermarket" office since the early 1990's. Does anybody know which supermarket or drug store occupied this location (1630 block Mission Blvd, between 71 Freeway and Dudley Street)?

Nope, this center never had a supermarket. Look at the live local view and its just a normal small building. This center was a complete failure from the beginning.

CW/HD also had a location in Montebello, which is still open, on Telegraph.

I do know that they were a division of Grossman's. I had a boss at Home Depot that came from Grossman's many years before and since the store I worked at was close to the Pomona location, we would keep an eye on their business. I came across this article:

Grossman's Inc is a retailer of lumber, building materials and other home improvement products. The company operates 39 stores under the names "Grossman's", "Contractors' Warehouse", "Mr. 2nd's Bargain Outlet", "The Project-Pros" and "Builder's Mart". The company's main customers include homebuilders, remodelers and serious do-it-yourself retail customers. Grossman has a 50% interest in a Mexican joint venture, operating under the name Builder's Mart.

Finally, I found this bio, which explains a bit of the evolution:

Rich Fiechter, president of HD Supply Repair & Remodel, is a 30-year-plus industry
veteran. He has complete accountability for the operation of HD Supply Repair &
Remodel, formerly known as Contractors’ Warehouse, including profit and loss
performance.

Rich’s accomplishments include directing a recovery from the 1997 bankruptcy of former
parent, Grossman’s Inc., into the extremely profitable, dynamic organization that it is
today. During his 23-year tenure, Rich has developed a highly competent, loyal and
committed team of functional leaders and warehouse general mangers.

Prior to becoming a member of the HD Supply family, Rich worked for Payless
Cashways for 10 years as a district manager to develop Payless Cashways into a
premier retail building materials company. During his tenure, Rich was actively involved
in developing and executing a growth strategy, resulting in an increase in store count
from 13 to 100 units.

HD Supply Repair & Remodel is part of HD Supply (http://www.hdsupply.com), a leading
wholesale distribution company, providing a broad range of products and services to
professional customers in the infrastructure & energy, maintenance, repair &
improvement and specialty construction markets. With a diverse portfolio of market-
leading businesses, HD Supply is one of the largest diversified wholesale distributors in
North America, with approximately 900 locations.

HD Supply was part of Home Depot (hence the HD in the name) and a few years was spun off as an independent retailer by Home Depot and is no longer affiliated with Home Depot.
