Marina Safeway in Montana - anyone know which town?

Post by TheStranger »

Interesting store hours here...I don't think this is the one in Helena (which I have posted before). Photo comes from a friend in San Francisco

I wonder if the sign company didn't error in the lettering, five hours doesn't seem like much of an open period.

I'm almost positive that is the store in Hamilton, which is south of Missoula. The only Montana Safeways I haven't been in are one of the Missoula stores and the one in Anaconda.

It's definitely not the store in Helena, which has received a really nice Lifestyle remodel. It still has the old-style signage on the outside but is a full Lifestyle store inside. If I had to guess I'd say the Helena store is 10 years old. It definitely wasn't a remodeled marina.

My mistake - I meant a Safeway in Butte with 1960s lettering on it, that marina:

yes this is the Hamilton Safeway, I was involved with an installation at this store in the early 90's. This store used to have an instore Bakery, that was closed in the 80's. A hot deli was installed in the early 90's and remains today.

Looks like Hamilton one has been fully upgraded to the Lifestyle model within the old Marina frame.
-Hamilton, MT street-view:

Non-grocery: But the K-Mart in Hamilton (still open) also has old looking signage on it, nothing I've ever seen on the East Coast. https://goo.gl/maps/eqZi2b7kaom

Closed/re-located Marina Safeway:
Dillon, MT (pretty low-quality image compared to avg. street view shot)

The new store is on the edge of the town.

Seems like there are a lot of newer looking Safeway stores just outside most of the MT towns. I'm sure with the lack of economic growth/re-development in some areas there are a few other hidden Marina and older non-Marina style closed Safeways in the rest of the state.

Looks like their (I'd say) 70's style (with the large red K and smaller blue-green mart). Many stores had a similar setup on their roadside signs (which, from this view, it seems this store doesn't HAVE a roadside sign?).

This was the Kmart logo from their debut in the 1960s until the early 1990s. I think there may still be a few other stores that still have it. One in Sacramento was still sporting it until about ten years ago. It's actually the logo I most associate with the chain (and oddly enough it still appears on a lot of the going out of business signage). The only slight difference in this store is that the "mart" seems a little smaller than usual in relation to the "K".

Within the past week, I read somewhere that Kmart was down to two stores remaining with the first, original logo, and one of those two stores, somewhere in the eastern U.S., recently updated to new signage (despite Kmart looking like it might not be around much longer) If this is correct, Hamilton may be the last one left with the old logo in use.

Thanks for the info!

Had some time today and found a second store with the same signage on it in Watertown, CT:

I looked to find an accurate existing thread to switch the conversation over to but the closest one was a thread talking about interior Kmart signs.

Actually, I saw on Facebook where Watertown's sign was finally updated.

I know this store well, Safeway #259 Butte Montana, this was the Seattle Division (possibly all of Safeway) last IBM PSS 3663 store, replaced with new IBM 4680, Fall 1993. Including a picture of the installation team including me, this is what the interior of the #259 looked like on the inside, the Bakery in this store had long been removed, and I don't think they had a Deli as yet. I had the pleasure of working in this store twice, once to install POS scanning with IBM PSS 3663 gear (used/refurbished) in 1990 and then converting to IBM 4680 three years later.
