1968 Payless Drug being demolished

Post by justin karimzad »

The Rite Aid at 1140 Blossom Hill Rd. in San Jose closed around February of this year, and is being demolished for a Whole Foods Market. Already rubble are the satellite shops that were to the right of the store, which included a 1960s former Farrell's parlor operating as City Diner, at 1160 Blossom Hill Rd. The Payless opened February 1968 as the fifth in San Jose, and was about 45,000 square feet, much of which was downsized by Rite Aid. The architecture was "Early California style", and the ceiling featured exposed laminated wood beams. The Office Max next door (open during construction) was a PW market. When I saw the Payless building on July 21, it was still standing but fenced off with demolition crew going in and out of the open entrance.
