The Real "Alpha Beta": Supermarket Chain in Greece

Post by Jason B. »

"Alpha Beta" was a supermarket chain in the United States in 20th century. Its name was derived from the first two letters of the Greek alphabet.

In the 21st century, an "Alfa-Beta" supermarket chain is operating in Greece (pronounced "Alfa Veeta" in Greek). It is formally known as "AB Vassilopoulos, S.A." It apparently has no connection whatsoever with the U.S. supermarket chain. The Greek "Alfa-Beta"chain was established 1969, but its first supermarket did not open until 1970. Here is a link to the chain's history: http://www.ab.gr/en/1_company/index.php?ID=our_history

"Alfa-Beta" presently has a blue and white logo consisting of the letters "A" and "B" in vertically-stacked boxes. A recent company press release says that it is the second largest food retailer in Greece. At the end of 2007, Alfa-Beta’s network consisted of 159 stores under the banners Alfa-Beta, AB City Market, ENA cash & carry, AB Foodmarket and AB Shop n’ Go. The Belgium-based Delhaize Group owns about 61% of "Alfa-Beta."
