These are pictures of the former Hughes/Ralphs at the northwest corner of Chatsworth and Zelzah in Granada Hills, which closed in 2007. This was talked about in this thread http://www.groceteria.com/board/viewtop ... f=2&t=1169 as being one of the unusual cases where two stores of the same chain were directly across the street from each other. This was one of the last Hughes ever built, as it replaced a bowling alley that was destroyed in the 1994 Northridge Earthquake. The City Council last week approved the plan to replace this store, along with adjacent stores in the shopping center, with a Kohl's so this Hughes isn't long for this world.

The glass brick motif on the exterior extended into the interior. The interior has been completely emptied, including all of the signage. The only signs that remain are the neon "service" signs for the service deli (on the left) and meats (in back). The alcove in back center, where you see the exposed drywall, is where the non-service deli items like cheese and lunchmeats were located, which was typical of a Hughes. The dairy cases were to the right. The checkouts were the circular design, and you can see their footprint on the floor.

The quality of the pictures isn't great since there is a tinting on one set of doors while the other set is blacked out.

Are there any examples of this interior still in existence in a store that's open?

The Monterey Park Ralphs (former Hughes) has a similar layout for the store. The market was remodeled by Hughes before the merger. The Deli / Bakery are located on the left of the store like this one, and they had an alcove which was taken out in the remodel. One feature, a Seafood counter, was closed during the Ralphs years, and the meat fridges taken out and replaced by freezers for the fish. The old tile and area is still behind it and easily visible in the store.

This was an early Hughes that was remodeled maybe a year before the takeover by Ralphs.
