I thought some of you might enjoy this picture and brief history of the Jewel Lake Safeway that was just open briefly in Anchorage Alaska. The 46,000 square foot stand alone (considered quite large at that time) new from the ground up featured four docking bays in the rear of the store, a handsome and bold wood and cement exterior with the latest red fixtures with graphic pictures for signage in the interior. The store was unprofitable from day one and was open less than a year due to a slowing economy (the oil pipeline was now completed) and the stand alone store was more difficult to navigate into than the Carr's across the street.

Now Safeway owns Carr's! It seems like Safeway is getting back in areas where they pulled out of....

I think this store would have lasted if Safeway didn't start selling off ost of their stores in 1988.

Didn't Safeway have substantial labor problems in Anchorage? Those would be part of the reason for this store's untimely closure.
