Safeway Stores That Lost Their Original Road Signs

Hi,
I do not know if this part of the board is appropriate for this post, but I would like to ask you all this question:
Why did some old Safeway stores (those built before the 1980's) lose their original road signs? One cause is wind damage, and the other could be road sign ordinances, which can affect the placement of them, that vary by state.
In the Portland, OR/Vancouver, WA area there were quite a few Safeways I'd been to that have since lost their original road signs, as I saw quite a few replacements for them when I was very young:
1025 SW Jefferson St, Portland, OR 97201 (opened 7-31-62)
401 "A" Ave, Lake Oswego, OR 97034 (opened 2-1-65)
10554 SE Main St, Milwaukie, OR 97222 (re-opened Spring 1967)
4315 SE Woodstock Blvd, Portland, OR 97206 (opened 7-10-67)
101 SE 82nd Ave, Portland, OR 97216 (opened 10-27-67)
8145 SW Barbur Blvd, Portland, OR 97219 (opened 6-10-68)
5420 SE 82nd Ave, Portland, OR 97266 (opened 8-18-69)
3940 SE Powell Blvd, Portland, OR 97202 (re-opened Spring 1974)
95 82nd Dr, Gladstone, OR 97027 (opened 12-15-76)
3527 SE 122nd Ave, Portland, OR 97236 (opened 10-19-77)
Out of all the locations I'd been to that had opened or re-opened in 1967, only the refined Milwaukie location kept its original pole sign through the end of its time in 1996. The other two, along with 82nd & Foster from 1969, have had their pole signs replaced during the mid to late 1980's.
The 82nd & Foster location also had a specific pole sign (on SE Foster Rd) that designated where the store's customers should park. This outlived the main pole sign (on SE 82nd Ave) by some five odd years, finally getting an update in 1992.
If anyone can please elaborate on this topic I would appreciate your time,
Ben
