Marina Safeway in the Compton area (now U-Haul)

Just saw this on Flickr:

This is probably one of the more unusual conversions from supermarket (in this case, to a U-Haul franchise); it's located at the junction of Long Beach Blvd. and Josephine Street. Anyone know when this location closed as a Safeway, and if it ever made it into the Vons era?

Interestingly enough, that's a fairly common conversion, particularly among former Safeway and A&P stores.

I passed that store not long ago....its an odd-shaped lot. the building is angled to the street.

I've seen several gas stations up here in NorCal turn into U-Haul places, but rarely anything supermarket-sized...

One I remember specifically is in Redwood City. It's a former pylon store on at 2200 El Camino, just south of the Woodside Road overpass.

I think I passed by that a few months ago and it was a storage place or gym, but not U-Haul...I'll have to check it again next time I'm in the Bay Area.

The address is 11716 Long Beach Blvd, Lynwood. Safeway originally opened in November, 1962. By 1979 it was being used as some sort of self-storage facility because I found several legal notices for the auctions of the contents of storage lockers. Also, it's not on my 1983 list of Safeway stores.
