A&P/Big Star, Atlanta, 1992
Just out of curiosity, when A&P acquired all the Atlanta-area Big Star stores around 1992, what banner did they end up operating under? Was it A&P, Sav-a-Center, or something else?
The stores used the "A&P" banner, sometimes with no additional wording, sometimes with the phrase Food Market added. Oftentimes, the words Food Market were run together (FoodMarket).
I'll do more research in my old Atlanta area flyers later. The company tried several things to jump start this business before closing it. The stores in my Northwest Florida area were once part of New Orleans Division, but they were later moved to the Atlanta Division as were some scattered stores in Alabama. All were closed when the Atlanta Division was folded.

The above quote sums it up rather well. Many of the former Big Star locations simply saw a replacement sign with the A&P name placed in the former Grand Union style rounded rectangle. Some stores with the Big Star name spelled out on the front in individual letters received different treatment. The original A&P stores were not usually modified further; many had in prior years had converted their store front signage to the medium green A&P was using in the area...some of the former Future Store locations had also been changed to this exterior color scheme for their signage.dooneyt63 wrote:The stores used the "A&P" banner, sometimes with no additional wording, sometimes with the phrase Food Market added. Little or no remodeling was done to the Atlanta stores. Some odd remodeling (mostly partial flooring jobs and signage) was done in some of the tiny Alabama stores transferred over to the Atlanta Division. As stated in other board posts, there was one of the Futurestore operations in Pensacola, but it was shuttered before the transition to the Atlanta Division. The other two Centennial stores in Pensacola were essentially unchanged other than outside signage. One was remodeled by the shopping center owner and A&P to hide most of the Centennial details after some storm damage. The older, smaller store on 12th Avenue took one back to the 1950's...even the floor had never been replaced. It had the old maroon and tan checkerboard used in many 1950's and early 1960's stores.

There's a former A&P location over on the corner of Canton Rd. and Blackwell Rd. It's currently a thrift store (under the America's Thrift Stores banner). Everything inside still looks pretty much the same; the place even has the funky style lighting above the checkout counters. Three different companies and the building still looks the same except it's rather run down now.
