Winslow, AZ: Older Safeway

Not sure of the vintage of this store (located right off Route 66), but the freestanding sign and 1960s lettering have been there for some time:

That Safeway was built in the late 70s-early 80s. It was a replacement for a 50s style Safeway in downtown Winslow that is now Casey's Color Center.

Winslow also had an interesting "super store"- a combination supermarket-dept store-lumberyard operated by Babbitt's, the former mercantile barons of Northern Arizona. In the early 80s, Babbitt's sold its grocery stores to Bashas' and it became one of several Bashas'/Babbitt's combinations (There were others in Page, Cottonwood, and Holbrook) When Babbitt's went out of business in the late 80s, the Winslow Bashas' moved out to a new bigger store next to I-40-across from the Safeway.

Is that a 50s style Safeway? The overhead shot seems to suggest it's a 1960s Marina.

Went into Casey's in Winslow, the former Safeway. It seems to be a pre-Marina design, the arch is not as pronounced as on a Marina store (and the clock from Safeway days is still on the back wall!) Casey's is an interesting store in itself, an old-style hardware store with a little bit of everything.

For those traveling across Northern Arizona, there is a 50s style former Safeway still standing (the square design) on the West side at the "Wye" near NAU. It houses a "Bun Huggers" restaraunt.

Does the roof have glu-lam beams? If so, it's still a marina...there of course were those late-50s "wavy awning" prototypes as well.
