For the record (and with a nine-year bump) all three stores do turn out to have been Kroger locations, and the Grandin location did indeed open before the other two.

Roanoke location list coming (finally) in a couple of days.

Were you able to confirm if these stepped-front stores were acquisitions or "virgin" Krogers? Maybe their Roanoke division just built things differently in the 1940s, if the latter's the case.

Other than confirming the previous resident of the Salem Main Street store, no such luck. I will look at the reverse lookups next time I'm up that way to see if I get a better feel. Honestly, I didn't think about it while I was there, thinking maybe the answer would be in the regular address lists.

The street renaming and renumbering in Roanoke since 1920 has been significant, but I think I've unlocked most of it.
