Vidalia, Georgia Piggly Wiggly Marina-style store

Post by buckhead »

As mentioned in another forum topic in months past, reference was made to the Marina-style Piggly Wiggly in Vidalia, Georgia.

The location in question can be seen via a link in that posting, at:

Does anyone have any photographs of this location over the years? I do not know if it is still standing or not. From the age of 10 or so I always took note of that store as we drove by on Georgia Highway 15 (on Jackson Street, I believe) on journeys to the coast. The arched front and roof as well as the distinctive "Piggly Wiggly" lettering made an impression. I never went in that store. The last time I drove past it was in 1991, and I believe it still may have been open as Piggly Wiggly. It had an S&H Green Stamps redemption center next to it if my memory is correct.

After Bruno's took over Piggly Wiggly Southern, or before then, did this location still serve as a grocery retailer? I regret not having had the foresight to document in photos this store. I'm sure I went past it over 100 times between the mid 60's and into the 90's.

I have an update for the 1960 Piggly Wiggly in Vidalia Georgia.

The property has been renovated by a local church still leaving a hint of the old "marina" style appearance.

Here are my recent photos. The front parking lot was closed off. So the photos were taken from the street.

This was a shopping center in downtown Vidalia and it includes the Vidalia Post Office. The Post office is still in the center, but the rest of the center consists of the building being renovated.

As for Piggly Wiggly, the name lives on in the former Winn-Dixie a few blocks east of the Downtown Vidalia area.

The Vidalia Winn-Dixie closed with the 1995-1996 round of closings as Winn-Dixie pulled out of East Georgia (Savannah market area)
