Storewanderer showed me this link last night, and I'm wondering if this was always an independent or a prototype for a chain...

New Deal used to have 2 locations in Merced. One was at the Merced Mall (Now a Big Lots) and the other was in the Bear Creek Village strip mall (Former Alpha Beta, now a gym). The location at the mall was the first to close, and the ex-Alpha Beta was gone by the early 90's. I suspect they were one of those chains that opened in locations abandoned by other chains.

Yes, New Deal did take over other supermarkets. They were in a small former early 1950s Safeway at 121 N. Santa Cruz ave. in Modesto for a time until 1997, when it was taken over by an independent that has since closed. There was also one very briefly in what had been a Save Mart at 2400 Coffee Rd. in Modesto, around 2000 or so. That has since become an independent. The former New Deal at 832 Oakdale Rd. is now a Grocery Outlet.
