Likewise, Pathmark and Waldbaums in Centereach, NY. In fact, there's probably many more of these examples now that A&P owns Pathmark.

Although surprisingly, due to the merger, they only had to divest six stores, all of which were in NY. One of those stores in Shirley, NY divested was a recently renovated Waldbaum's Fresh Market. It became Stop & Shop (which they've renovated *twice* in less than two years). The rest were in Staten Island and became King Kullens.

Ecksherly, that superstore was the "new" Kroger when I was a kid, but I remember the "old" Kroger which had been at the intersection of Center and Mercer in downtown.. This is now the location of the new Post Office.

Kroger is to the left, while Princeton Bank & Trust was in the triangular building at the "point". Later in the 70's, that building also served as Princeton's City Hall. Notice that First Methodist Church was only half its present size. IIRC, the superstore on Stafford Drive opened around 1971 or so.

On a personal note from the "Only in WV" pages, I was christened at First Methodist in the Spring of 1962 by my great-great-aunt's nephew. Uncle Willie (my grandfather's bio-uncle) and his wife Kate never had children of their own, but the minister in Princeton happened to be the son of Aunt Kate's brother. So while they were not themselves related to one another, both Papa and Rev. McM shared an aunt & uncle.

Hacienda Heights CA in Los Angeles County has the Tawa owned 99 Ranch (former Pantry/Vons) and its discount division 168 Market (former Albertsons).

In nearby Rowland Heights, the Chinese grocer Great Wall tookover HK2 Food District and converted it to their discount division "C-Mart", which they operate several C-Marts in Massachusetts. Tawa also has a 99 (former Gemco) and 168 (former Lucky/Albertsons) but about 1.5 miles separate both stores. The area also has Tak Shing Hong (aka TS Emporium) with 2 stores very close to each other (City of Industry-former Levitz Furniture and Rowland Heights-former Builder's Emporium).

Also in LA County, within the city of Alhambra, Tawa again has 2 stores very close to each other - 168 (former Crawford's Corner/Kroger Market Basket/Vons) and 99 (former Ralphs). Great Wall also operates 2 stores in nearby city of Rosemead - the one on Valley Blvd is a former Alpha Beta and the one south of the 10 Freeway is a portion of the former Kmart/Builder's Square.

Mt. Pleasant, TX has two Brookshire Grocery owned stores just around the corner from each other.

Brookshire's #16 is at 308 Ferguson Road, just past its intersection with US 271 Business. At that intersection is Super 1 Foods #611, which was opened in a former TG&Y building.

The two stores have different formats (Brookshire's is full service, Super 1 is warehouse), but have coexisted since at least 1989.

Other BGC towns like Longview, Marshall and Natchitoches, LA have converted substantially all stores to Super 1. There is one Brookshire's in Longview now, #45, but it's in an extreme northwest part of the city, and the third Fresh by Brookshire's just opened up there.
