Houston: Safeway/AppleTree history?

Post by TheStranger »

While googling to see if I could find more old marinas out in the Houston area (which was divested after the KKR buyout), I found some intriguing details about what did happen to that division.

This article that storewanderer linked me to has a good rundown of the basic history (buyout by regional managers in 88 while concurrently the Dallas division got liquidated without a purchaser, heavy debt load and declining market share, 1992 strike, and the unloading of stores in most of its areas): http://www.chron.com/content/chronicle/ ... 3.2-0.html

The initial selloff:

According to the Wikipedia supermarket page...

Apple Tree (Houston, Dallas & Austin, Texas) The former Safeway, Inc. stores in Texas. The former Safeway employees bought out the assets of Safeway and formed Apple Tree. There was one Apple Tree store still left in Bryan, Tx as of 2003.
Anyone have any more info (i.e. addresses, photographs, more history) about the former Safeway Houston division?
