Found this tooling around Time Magazine archives:

"Posted Monday, Aug. 31, 1959

SUPERMARKET GAS stations will be constructed by Food Fair chain (sixth biggest in U.S.) on parking lots of its 400 stores. Plan calls for 24 stations within a year, others later. "

1959 folks...............amazing!

The Food Fair on W. Broad Street in Richmond had a gas station. I believe it was the first Food Fair in Richmond (c. 1960).

Hmmm, don't tell Kroger this. (They may actually believe that they invented the supermarket "Fuel Center" concept) LOL.
