Big Star in Washington

Post by danielh_512 »

Did they ever make it that far? This weekend I was in Arlington, and saw an indie under the FoodRite cooperative, called Food Star, complete with a star in the middle, resembling Big Star. The store was located along Columbia Pike. I know Grand Union was there until the 1980's, but did they ever convert any to the Big Star format?

I don't believe so. On the dcgrocery website, there are pictures of at least one Food Star (on George Mason Drive) that is a former Grand Union (still has the "GU" initials welded into the wrought iron fence in front of the store). The star in the sign is different as well (plain, not with the word "Food" like the sign in my avatar).

Also, Grand Union had stores in the DC area that were remodeled into what I suppose can be called the "Clean, Fresh & Good" prototype with that slogan in plastic "stained glass" in the ceiling above the checkout. Grand Union had stores of exactly same prototype in Richmond, slogan and all, but under the Big Star banner.
