Y'know, I've seen another store converted into either a TV or radio station somewhere, and I can't remember the specifics now.Dave wrote:How about an A&P into a television station? WBOY, Channel 12, Clarksburg, WV:
Of course, SF has an old Safeway at Turk and Fillmore that's been converted into a police station:
Hah! Small change! How about police HEADQUARTERS? Virginia Commonwealth University Police, 940 W. Grace Street; Pender's 1937-1941, Little Star 1942-1947, Colonial 1948-1960 (also Top Value Redemption Store to around 1970):Groceteria wrote:...Of course, SF has an old Safeway at Turk and Fillmore that's been converted into a police station...

I don't have photos but an old Piggly Wiggly (Southern) in Jackson Georgia (40 mi south of Atlanta) was recently converted into tthe Butts County Georgia courthouse annex. And a Dollar General is in the former drug store adjacient to the old Supermarket.
The supermarket space is now where residents of this county can pay property taxes, car license plates and attend county commission meetings.

In Las Vegas there are 2 buildings that were Albertsons then Raley's that are now Big Lots that did not switch to Smith's when Kroger took over the Las Vegas Raley's locations a couple years back. Also, there is an early 80's looking Vons at Tropicana and Jones that was closed and became an antique mall which moved to a new location last year and now sits empty.

Here's a story about a Memphis Schnuck's turned into an elementary school. Looks like they did a quickie remodel!

I think that is a great idea. Making use of old abandoned retail space.Dave wrote:http://www.commercialappeal.com/mca/edu ... 92,00.html

In Macon Georgia, they actually tore down a former K-Mart building and built a Vocational-Technical High School in its space. But converting empty buildings can be a very creative and cost-cutting move. Like the former bakery section in the Memphis story now used as the school cafeteria. (ready made kitchen). Good idea in saving some tax dollars.

Schools in old groceries
There is an old A frame style store connected to a small fifties like mini mall in Tara Hills which is near the Hilltop Mall in Richmond Ca where they have turned not only the store but also the mini mall as a Christian Academy.
