NEW: Akron, 1939-2020

This one was so incredibly hard, so please be gentle with your criticisms. I used multiple sources because the directory data was sorely lacking in this case (e.g. A&P and Kroger individual locations were not listed at all before the 1960s) and the newspaper ads were inconsistent as well. I spent three or four times as long on this as I would a typical list of this size and I feel pretty good about it, but I'm sure it's not 100% perfect.

Anyway, enjoy...

Century entered the market independently from Loblaw and then Loblaw later bought the stores in 1961 and combined the two chains, which is why they had so many stores in Cuyahoga Falls. The West Market Century opened in 1952. There’s a link to the grand opening somewhere online.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Kroger had some stores that were short lived. The Cleveland stores rapidly turned over in the grocery store and supermarket eras. A few stuck around for 20-25 years but others only lasted a few. Like Cleveland, they had strong local competition in Akron and Kroger never did well under those circumstances.
