4141 Jacob St (42nd & Jacob) opened as a Thorofare in 1959, was purchased by By-Rite in 1963:

Thanks! I had wondered whether Thorofare ever had a presence in Wheeling. Will update. Thanks also for the pointer to the Wheeling newspaper archive, which will allow me to dive more deeply into some other questions I had.

Hmm, no trace of Loblaws? That chain did exist in Weirton and Steubenville around 1960, but i guess this proves they didn't go any further downstream than that.

I'd initially expected some too. Nothing in the directories, though, and as I was looking at the newspapers today the only mention of Loblaws was in the short-lived "Steubenville edition" of the Wheeling paper.

PH Butler was the ancestor of Thorofare.
