Safeway, Cranbrook, BC, 1981

Post by Andrew T. »

Recently, some 1981-vintage pictures of a Safeway store in Cranbrook, British Columbia were posted on Paul Niedermayer's Curbside Classic blog:

https://www.curbsideclassic.com/blog/vi ... ear-is-it/

These are great photos! The store itself featured very subdued post-Marina 1970s architecture, and was integrated into a shopping mall with Woolworth serving as a co-anchor. Yet it also featured a fantastic googie dipole sign, that looks downright incongruous compared to what it's in front of!

A similar sign survives outside the Safeway on Marion Street in Winnipeg, Manitoba today, albeit modernized. As for Cranbrook itself, a Safeway store remains on the site...but it's been completely rebuilt, and all the vintage elements of the shopping centre that existed 40 years ago are long-gone.
"The pale pastels which have been featured in most food stores during the past 20 years are no longer in tune with the mood of the 1970s."
