Los Angeles-1960s-Supermarket on La Brea Avenue-Mentioned in 1965 Picture "The Loved One"

Post by Jason B. »

In the 1965 picture "The Loved One," the character Mr. Joyboy refers to "the giant supermarket, the one on La Brea Street." See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOMm86R_67w

Does anyone know if that was a reference to a real supermarket? I assume that he meant La Brea Avenue in Los Angeles because the film is set in the Los Angeles area.

It would be interesting if Evelyn Waugh's "The Loved One" novel (set in 1940s Los Angeles and the basis for the movie) also includes a mention of a supermarket.

After re-listening to the dialogue, I've determined that the movie character (Mr. Joyboy) refers to "the Food Giant supermarket, the one on La Brea Street." Presumably that was a real supermarket in the Los Angeles area in the early 1960s.

The Hollywood Market which was an independent 24 hour market that famousbduring those years. Other than that the only major markets on La Brea were then Safeway on La Brea/Sunset and Mayfair LaBrea/Fountain.
