Denver, CO: Super/markets near Stapleton airport early '80s

Post by mike_mac »

Hi Groceterians.

I'm doing some more research for a novel and am after some information in Colorado.

What super/markets were adjacent to the Stapleton International Airport in the early 1980s?
Perhaps on Quebec Street or East Colfax Avenue, and a short distance from the terminal.

Also related to this, what supermarkets had a Fotomat booth in Denver or Grand Junction?
Or, what supermarkets near Avon/Vail would have photo processing? Any brand will do.

I have researched the Denver Public Library archives and now checking the Denver Post.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Mike

Hmm, interesting.

Did find this Piggly Wiggly on the corner of E Montview Blvd & Dayton St from the 1950s.
It's to the south of where Stapleton International Airport was, but a bit too far away.

Curiously, the building is still there but is now a Mexican taco and burrito joint.

This was the only result in searching for 'Stapleton supermarket' on the Denver Post Archives.
The rest I scrolled through numerous pages of other Stapleton-related photos 1975 to 1985.

Am still looking for the above information, just posted what I'd found in the interim.

There is a Denver section on the site with data through 1979:

Great. That Denver section link was very useful, and I've now narrowed my search.

I would like any information on either of the following around East Colfax and Leyden Street.
Specifically if any of these still existed in December 1982, or what they might have been.

1. 6260 East Colfax Ave — Save-A-Nickel up to 1951
2. 1460 Leyden Street — Safeway up to 1951
3. 6420 East Colfax Ave — Safeway up to 1945
4. 6200 East Colfax Ave — Currently Walgreens, but when did it open?
5. 1414 Leyden Street — Curious old Mayfair Center, Google Map View

These are suitable as within a few blocks of the Driftwood Motel, that is mentioned in the story.
Considering the main character finds shelter for a few days in the Xmas snow storm of 1982.

Thanks for any more help.
