Albertsons's Health and Home Division

Post by luckysaver »

American Stores started "Health & Home" home health care division within American Drug Stores in the late 1990's. They had a small chain of 25,000 sq ft of retail stores and selected Savon/Osco stores had a "Health & Home" department, which Albertsons added more departments in the drugstores and continued to maintain the standalone "Health & Home" units.

When CVS acquired Albertsons' Drug division, what happened to the standalone Health & Home chain? Did it become CVS Home Health Center or did those stores convert to a regular CVS Pharmacy with Home Health?

This is from Wikipedia:

On January 23, 2006, CVS announced that it had agreed to acquire the freestanding drug store operations of supermarket chain Albertsons. The deal included the acquisition of 700 drug stores trading under the Osco Drug and Sav-On Drugs banners, mostly in the Midwest and Southwestern United States with primary concentration of stores in Southern California and Chicagoland; and was formally completed on June 2, 2006. Transition of Sav-On and Osco stores to the CVS brand began shortly thereafter, and was completed by December 2006. CVS now dominates the Southern California market. Also included were Albertsons Health'n'Home (now CVS Home Health) durable medical equipment stores. Approximately 28 CVS Home Health locations are present in Arizona, California and the Kansas City area; representing CVS's first venture into the specialized DME market.

In case you didn't about these medical equipment stores, the old Health n Home chain was started as a unit of American Drug Stores Inc, part of American Stores, later part of Albertsons' pharmacy operations. This was right around the time they created the short-lived Kap's Kitchen and Pantry convenience store near the Salt Lake corporate headquarters. These 25000 sq ft retail stores carried home health equipment and medical supplies such as nursing scrubs, gloves and surgical/clinical products usually not sold in Savon or Osco locations. Included is a Savon or Osco branch pharmacy that often includes specialty services.

Smaller departments in large Savon or Osco stores carried limited assortment of durable equipment such as transfer chairs, portable toilets, and canes along with smaller supplies and a few styles of scrubs and lab coats. There was also a service desk staffed with a HHE specialist that would help customers only during "office hours", plus free literature on usage of certain pieces of equipment.

Yes, this division is now the CVS Home Health Division and CVS maintains this division just about the same way Albertsons did between 1998-2006.

Anybody been inside a standalone Health n Home store (during the ASC/Albertsons era)?

Was it merely a rebadged Savon or Osco?

I wonder if any the full-line Albertsons combo stores got a "Health n Home" department within the drug store department? Given Albertsons other experiments (like lawn and garden centers), I can believe it.
