Safeway: Bothell, WA

Post by storewanderer »

Interesting store. The store only had three checkstands (old cashier unloads) and a very limited amount of dairy, produce, meat. Lots of chilled alcohol. I was in there early evening and there were more employees than customers but it seemed to have a fairly steady flow of people coming in and out.

I guess someone forgot this one. Too bad they didn't forget to remodel entirely in the 80's.

Old time Northwest Safeways never disappoint!

Wow... they even have the old fold-up shopping carts. I wonder why they left the original "thank you for shopping at safeway" lettering when they took everything else out.

By the way, your first link doesn't work right.

Update: It looks like this store's days are numbered. Developer purchases Bothell Safeway, plans $50 million retail/residential development. This location was built in 1962.

If I recall, there have been plans for a replacement store for this one nearby for some time now, but it's never materialized. Even compared to other Marinas, this one seems like a rather small store.

I don't think it does much business. It didn't seem that small. Interesting. Do we know when it opened? I notice it has the door configuration like the 1950's stores (one door facing the sides one facing the lot). But a difference here was meat was on the back wall. Most small marinas had meat on the side wall.

It opened in December 1962. Here's the grand opening ad. As usual for grand openings of the day, Teeny, "Safeway's Magical Clown" was in attendance.

In searching the Seattle Times database, I came across some classified ads that indicate this store was built concurrently with the recently demolished Bellevue store, as they were hiring for both stores.

The Bellevue store is still standing, but vacant aside from some seasonal uses of the Bartell Drugs space. The store's parking lot was also the site of a (notoriously short) Miley Cyrus concert back in November that was part of the Microsoft Store grand opening in Bellevue Square. Eventually the plan is to demolish it and other nearby buildings for construction of two new highrise buildings, and there have been recent indications that the project (delayed by economic conditions) is moving forward again.

The Bellevue store was about 24,000 square feet, apparently once had an interior entrance from the Safeway store to the neighboring Bartell Drugs, and opened on January 30th, 1963. More info here (although most of you have probably seen it already:)
