When did the Lansdowne PA Acme close?

Post by Ephrata1966 »

This was an early A Frame from about 1963 at 63 N Union Ave. Coincidence? I know the store closed no later than 2005 and for the past few years has been a Save-A-Lot. This is a classic example of the A Frame in the middle of nowhere. Lansdowne is urban, but this store was off a side street by itself. Acme was at Union and Pembroke/Stewart Aves, but A&P built a new store in the 1970s (later Super Fresh) on Baltimore Pike between Union and Hirst Aves, which has been abandoned since early 2002. I heard TJ Maxx would be moving in but maybe not. What is also strange is that the store closed with the Acme red oval logo, but still had the original multicolored glass underneath. The Giant across the street must have killed these stores, along with Acme in Yeadon (former Super Saver) and Acme in West Philly (former Food Fair).

The Lansdowne store did close in 2005, with the Aston store later that year. The Giant opened in 2004, so it only overlapped briefly with Acme. The Acme in Yeadon was long gone by that point, and 58th & Baltimore was a Great Valu back then. Super Fresh closed in 2002, so it was gone possibly before the Giant was even planned.
