Closed Jackson, MS Kroger to Reopen

Post by KMJonOBR »

A closed Jackson, MS Kroger grocery store will reopen in September under Mississippi based "Vowell's Market Place" banner. The South Jackson Kroger closed with controversy in August of 2007 due to "changing demographics." The store is a Kroger greenhouse located at 2101 Raymond Road which opened in 1985 and closed in August of 2007. The store was slated to close in September 2007, but they instead closed the store on Sunday, August 26, 2007 in response to a protest that took place on Saturday August 25, 2007. Following the closure, Kroger held on the to the lease until August 2009 at which point it was scheduled to reopen as Vowells. Due to a disagreement with the then landlord, the deal fell through. This year, however, the store has a new landlord, a lease has been signed, the store is under renovations and will reopen in September 2010. This vacant Kroger store sports the "Kroger Superstore" interior decor package despite this being a greenhouse. From the looks of the renovations, the decor will be removed and updated. This is a major help for South Jackson, as the area has seen some decline in the past several years. Portions of South Jackson has been labeled a "food desert" due to the lack of supermarkets.

Prior to 2005,
South Jackson had the following stores

Brookshire's (Former Albertsons) 2861 Terry Road
Winn-Dixie (Now Piggly Wiggly) 2875 McDowell Rd Ext
Kroger 3520 Terry Road
Kroger 2101 Raymond Road
Save-A-Lot 835 Cooper Road
WinnDixie SaveRite (now New Horizon Church) 1775 Ellis Avenue
Walmart Supercenter 2711 Greenway Drive

South Jackson 2010

Piggly Wiggly 2875 McDowell Road Ext
Kroger 3520 Terry Road
Save-A-Lot 835 Cooper Road
Walmart Supercenter 2711 Greenway Drive

Brookshire's pulled out of Mississippi with a sale of 2 stores to Kroger and closure of 2 stores.
Following Winn-Dixie's departure from Central Mississippi, their Winn Dixie store on McDowell Road became Piggly Wiggly and their SaveRite store at Ellis Avenue is now New Horizon Church International.
