The Owl Drug Company/Rexall stores

Post by Dean »

Came across a 1943 picture of The Los Angeles Times building.

I noticed that there was The Owl Drug Company on the ground floor.

Found the following interesting info:

I read somewhere that there is an Owl-Rexall still operating on 401 N Vincent Ave in Covina at San Bernardino Road. I googled it and sure enough, its still there. The store's website is

http://www.owlrexall.com

Their about us page says "...serving the community since 1957". It says it also operates "Owl Homecare Pharmacy" as a subsidiary, since 1998, located at 13851 Garvey Ave, Baldwin Park (east of Francisquito, north of the 10 freeway, shares office with a dentist).

Another website says it doubles as durable medical equipment shop called "K and S Owl Inc".

The picture below shows the Covina storefront, courtesy of DAPlus.us. The way the storefront looks, it appears it is the original building from 1957. By the way, Vincent Ave had significant improvements in that area, including the 10 Freeway being built at Vincent that same year.

When I was driving from Salt Lake City to Flagstaff last year, I came across a drugstore In the small town of Panguitch Utah along US 89 that isn't really a Rexall anymore, but was one for many years , and still has a fairly large Rexall sign in front of the building. It was a rather interesting place as drugstores go, and seemed to be three or four different stores rolled into one space. You could get everything there from scrapbooking supplies to HDTVs (part of the store was a Radio Shack) to cowboy gear (as in the stuff you would use if you were actually dealing with cattle,) all under one roof. I seriously doubt you'd find a place like it anywhere near a city of any significant size.

For a good view an Owl Drug Company Store. Rent "Dark Passage" with Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. I just saw it on Free Movies on Demand on Time Warner Cable. There's an on location scene in San Francisco where they show a cable car turning around and it is in front of a large Owl Drug Store.

Thanks for the referral; that's Powell and Market, later Woolworth's and now Gap. There's a shot of that scene towards the bottom of this page;
