Does anybody remember the A & P stores in Southern Calif

Post by wayne winterland jr. »

I remember one in Santa Ana, Calif. and it was run just like all the other A & P stores of that time. Just another regular grocery store with nothing special about it at all. It didn't look much like the A & P stores in the midwest but more like a Boy's Market or a McCoys Market in a strip center. A & P finally gave up and left Calif. but this particular A & P store sold out to a company (i'm not really sure if it was a Smart and Final Iris store or somebody elses) that reopened and renamed the store the HIPPO Grocery Store (yes you guess it short fot the Hippopotamus Store) and this name was to signify that they carried large institutional size products and at their grand opening the gave the customers small
sized red colored hippopotamus savings banks and that was especailly nice because the kids could play with them and they would also be a reminder of where the parents and children got the hippo banks.

Thanks, Wayne Winterland Jr.
