New location list: San Mateo County

Post by Groceteria »

The Bay Area is where the site was born and (like San Jose last week) this feels a little like a homecoming of sorts. Covers Palo Alto, Menlo Park, Redwood City, San Carlos, San Mateo, and Burlingame, roughly 1926-1977:

A YouTube video apparently has exterior shots of supermarkets (and other retail stores) from northern San Mateo County (and possibly San Francisco) from circa 1971-72. See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANVzJeVjnoc

Supermarket exterior shots include:
12:29 Mayfair Market (unknown location)
13:06 Safeway (unknown location)
14:11 Petrini's Manor Market (unknown location)
14:54 McCambridge's Miraloma Market
15:12 Tower Market
16:19 Lucky (unknown location - tall pylon sign)
24:15 front of unknown store (Roger Wilco???)
25:17 (probably the most visually interesting part of the video) patrons exit unknown store (Roger Wilco???)

In the comments section, a "Robtimus Cron" wrote: "These are all along the San Francisco Peninsula. I can identify the exact location of several of them. I left out the one's I can't figure out
1:58 Kmart, El Camino Real, Colma (it's now a Kohl's)
3:01 White Front, 16th Street, San Francisco
4:51 Gemco, Serra Center, Colma (it's now a Target)
11:06 Walgreens, Westborough Square, South San Francisco (still open, but in new building)
11:17 Longs Drugs, Serramonte Mall (now a gym)
11:39 "Medical Pharmacy" Grand Ave, South San Francisco"

The Tower Market is a Molly Stone's now, but still has the Tower sign:

I've seen this video before and it's great. A lot of these stores are in San Francisco proper rather than San Mateo County.

3:09 The White Front may be the 16th Street/Potrero location in San Francisco (now a Safeway and an attached shopping center) but I can't tell for sure.

12:30 Mayfair is definitely Ocean Avenue in SF.

13:09 Safeway is probably 1150 Ocean Avenue in SF (now demolished).

15:00 Miraloma Market, Portola Drive, SF (a couple of doors down from the Tower Market/Mollie Stone's)

16:20 Lucky store at Lakeshore Plaza on Sloat Boulevard, SF. It was replaced about 1992 when the center was rebuilt.

The Thrifty Drug at 19:30 was in Corte Madera Center up in Marin. The drugstore interior shots at the beginning are the inside of that Walgreen's in Westborough Square. The "Food Center" seen at 22:46 was in Westlake shopping center in Daly City, opposite the mall from JC Penney seen to the left. Safeway is there now, but in a newer building. The Pay Less Drug at 23:46 was on Alemany Blvd in San Francisco (demolished in 2000). That Roger Wilco looks like it might be the one at "The Square" shopping center in Novato. It was later Bell Market and Delano's IGA, and closed in 2009:

The San Mateo County Historical Society has an interesting photo from the 1940s or '50s of a Lucky store with a pylon sign (reminiscent of the Lucky store in Berkeley, Calif. on North Shattuck Avenue).
See: https://historysmc.org/event/courthouse ... y-highway/

Based upon another similar photo:
https://historysmc.org/courthouse-docket/
the location might be near El Camino Real and Crystal Springs Road in or near San Bruno and the time period might be 1951-53.

Can anyone figure out the store location?

Yeah that is the San Bruno Lucky. You can also see it in these photos:

IIRC (from a photo I saw years ago) the Honda dealership on El Camino in San Bruno is a former Safeway, and the Walgreens is the ex-Lucky.

---

Some other San Mateo County locations I can think of, since this and SF are home territory for me:

- Seafood City, South San Francisco on 3573 Callan Boulevard. I recall it was a Lucky in the 70s, but grew up with it as a Longs drugs in the 1990s. Later became Ocean Seafood Market, and for the last four or five years has been Seafood City, a SoCal based Filipino/Asian supermarket, complete with some associated Jollibee-owned food outlets attached to it (Jollibee, Red Ribbon and a Chow King in the outlot).

- former Safeway at Skyline and Sharp Park, closed by early 80s. I want to say I saw a photo of it in one of those local history books that are on sale at Walgreens out here, or maybe on the forums. IIRC it was a Marina shape too. Entire shopping center (which included a bowling alley) now an apartment complex since the early 90s at least.

- former Safeway at Westborough Square, closed 1997 and then was a Pet Club for about 15 years. Demolished as part of the shopping center renovations ca. 2013-2014 which also led to Walgreens getting a new building. This Safeway had the circle S logo all the way until closure, and a color-on-white version of the 1960s decor package inside. It also was 1 block away from the former KMart on Gellert Boulevard that was Pak N Save from the 1980s to about 2016 and is now a full line Safeway.

- I photographed it when it was being demolished and posted it here some time ago: the former marina Safeway at Junipero Serra near Washington Street in Daly City, replaced by In-N-Out and Krispy Kreme. was a furniture store before it finally gave up the ghost about 21-22 years back

- Another former marina Safeway is in use as the Asian supermarket Pacific Super, at St. Francis Square in Daly City. I have never seen a photo of it as a Safeway though

The Pacific Super in Daly City in a former Marina Safeway building has closed as of April 2021:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/DalyCit ... 936243806/

This seems to have occurred not long after Korean chain HMart took over the former supermarket space on Alemany in SF that prior to the 2000s, had been the site of a now-demolished Lucky.

---

Went to the Sharon Heights Safeway in Menlo Park on Monday night. On the surface, a shake-roof front. But inside, this seems like this is a Marina Safeway of some sort!

The 1959 court case "Safeway Stores Incorporated v. City of Burlingame" (170 Cal.App.2d 637) refers to a Safeway store, a Lucky store, and a municipal parking district in Burlingame, San Mateo County, Calif.

See:
https://law.justia.com/cases/california ... 0/637.html or
https://caselaw.findlaw.com/ca-court-of ... 09103.html

The court decision states, "the City Council of Burlingame which included within the proposed district the Safeway Store and its parking lot. The latter has 119 parking spaces, of which only 71 spaces are required to accommodate the peak load at the parking lot. According to the engineer's report to the Council of Burlingame, the Safeway parking lot alone provides over one-third of all private off-street parking spaces found within the proposed parking district.", "The city hall appears to be in about the center of the district. The city parking lot adjacent to the Safeway parking lot faces Howard Street." and "Also excluded from the district, as above mentioned, was the Lucky Store property which is located on the southeast corner of El Camino Real and Chapin Avenue."

I have no idea what became of the 1950s Safeway and Lucky store buildings in downtown Burlingame.

This legal opinion is still relevant today in California law as a precedent for consolidation of cases on appeal.

The Lucky building is still there, much modified, and is now a Mollie Stones. The Safeway was torn down and rebuilt with a much larger footprint about ten years ago, after a decade or more of controversy.

Interesting store. I wonder if it was built as a standard Marina and camouflaged later of if they took the standard design and modified it to match the center from the beginning. Based on when it was built (apparently late 1960s) I would guess the latter.

Just saw on a mid-century modern group I'm in, a photo of the 1963-early 2010s marina Safeway in Millbrae when it first opened!

(Got permission from the original image poster, Chris Rooney, to share this)

I went here once in 2009 or 2010 when it was still a Marina, but with the opaque name panel on the front. This has since been demolished and replaced with a second-floor Safeway (parking on first floor) that I do visit often.
