Actually, I'd say that Safeway's location patterns in SF are as much a function of the city's population density as of market share. The 345 Williams location closed approximately 1986. In 1991, it reopened as ABC Market, which was owned by Cala/Bell, and subsequently was rebranded Food4Less and the...

Actually, the 4950 Mission Safeway is close enough that Safeway probably would've considered it a "consolidation" or at least have publicized it that way at the time. The Lucky store you mention was at the southwest corner of Geneva and Alemany, not really in Vis Valley. An apartment compl...

Re: Rheem, CA Marina/Pylon Safeway - where exactly is Rheem?

Using Mapquest and Yahoo to find Rheem both point to a location near Richmond Parkway and Giant Hwy in the Richmond area, which seems too industrial for a Safeway location (I drove near there a couple of days ago). Then again, that might be it (as it is the only town with that name that either map ...

Re: San Francisco: Bayshore Boulevard ex-Marina Safeway

Anyone know when and why this store closed? There doesn't seem to be much of a supermarket presence in the area (the Geneva Lucky having closed years earlier, the El Rancho Supermarket on Geneva closing down about 5 years ago and being finally demolished a few months back, and the nearest other ex-...

What is your evidence that they were there in '64? Everything I've read suggests that First National bought the entire New York division and that they did it well before '64. Something like the Moody's industrial manual would have a listing. The division was a chronic money loser for Safeway and it...

I thought Colonial briefly as well, but the pylon doesn't feel right. Most Colonial stores in the last 1950s had non-structural tower signs, and most had front entrances even if there was a side parking lot. Maybe at some point, I'll hit the library up there. There's just too much ahead of it right ...

Safeway was gone from NYC before the Marina was introduced. They sold their stores to First National--according to this iste, it was in '58;although I think it was more like '61. Either way, it's unlikely to have been a Safeway. Lots of other chains used barrel vault ceilings and you can find non-S...

Re: New York area: Waldbaums (Safeway?)

I'm not usr about the store in question, but Safeway did operate in the greater NYC area, and did have stores in Queens through the mid-1960s.

I'd have to see more, but it looks like one of their fairly common 1960s gabled stores that's been drastically remodeled, particularly since it still seems to have the dual entrances. Other than the roof, these stores looked pretty much like the Marina prototype stores. http://www.groceteria.com/saf...

I agree that it doesn't really feel like an A&P, due to the side entrance and the lack of angled windows. Doesn't much look like any Colonial prototypes of that era either, although I guess it could be one. I'm not sure whether or not Big Bear went that far north that early. Winn-Dixie is one I ...

I'm inclined to guess Kroger, but I'm definitely not certain.

What I want to know is where do you find those cans of beer like they have on Roseanne and various other TV shows -- the cans where it looks like it says "Coors" but it really says "Beer" in the same font? :.: Those are a special brand available only in the art department at War...

Re: Orinda Lucky's

Continuing from a previous thread, where was the original Lucky in Orinda, CA and what became of it? All I know of it is from reading a 1954 newspaper article stating that it would open soon at such and such address that I don't remember. Also, when did the replacement Lucky at 27 Orinda Way (that ...
