Re: Save-Rite Food Town name question
Actually, it was a joint cooperative warehousing venture that Food Town started with two other small NC chains in 1967 so they could cut ties with MDI, the large distributor. Otherwise, it was (as you mentioned) the warehouse, which they eventually bought out the other two (smaller) chains when the...

Re: Save-Rite Food Town name question
I really should read that whole book again. It’s been like 20 years. Since it lacks an index, I only found the part about the warehouse when I was skimming through tonight. I missed the one store they renamed. Thanks! You're welcome - I'm not sure how I happened to hit that part either. Seems to be...

Re: Save-Rite Food Town name question
In the book about the chain, they do mention using one store (Main St in Salisbury) and renaming it Save Rite, at least for a time. This was when they were trying out their LFPINC (Lowest Food Prices in NC) before it was expanded to all the stores, thus the name difference to make it obvious that th...

Re: Wal-Mart stores with old signage
The Abingdon, MD store that was mentioned earlier in thread was initially up for relocation as a Supercenter. When that failed Walmart started looking at expanding the existing store. Prince Frederick opened in November 1991, and Waldorf opened a month prior to the Manassas location if you count th...

Re: Weis in Northern VA
Yep, other end of the strip was a Kmart that closed in 2017. Was Victory Market separate from Weis or was it another Mr Zs kind of thing where Weis bought them but kept the old name for a while. If anything, this was a one off and honestly my history of the area ended in June 1980 when we moved bac...

Re: Weis in Northern VA
now closed Stroudsburg, PA store had the same exterior (thanks to Google Street View for having older pictures to show us this store!). Was this store in the same plaza with the K-Mart? If so, it actually began life as a Victory Market back in the 70's. Yep, other end of the strip was a Kmart that ...

Re: Safeway locations-Oakland, Calif.-1963
When you zoom in on the photo, it actually looks like it could be two different items. The "box" in the back and the part that looks like it is stacked may actually be supported by the metal posts just in front of it (from the view of the photographer). The wooden? part that sits farther b...

Re: Mystery store, 500 Park Ave, Beausejour, MB
proves that the building is a former supermarket, and it operated as a Shop-Easy store as late as 2009. Shop-Easy is a chain name that came up during my Thunder Bay research, and I *thought* it had gone totally defunct in the 1970s...but this wouldn't be the first time I had my preconceptions chall...

http://www.fdrama.com/ - This has history on that chain (and when first opening it mentions buying Basics).

Re: A Little Help?
I found a 1990 WASHINGTON POST article about the top 10 grocers in the DC area (Giant and Safeway were #'s 1 and 2; surprise surprise!). Number 9 was Basics (3 stores) while Number 10 was Dayton/Mitchell Thriftways (also 3 stores). I've never heard of either. There's a post here that says Basics wa...

Re: 2 Pathmark stores right next to each other?
I vaguely remember seeing signage (though I think the store was closed by that point) many years ago outside the Pittsfield (MA) area (more like Lenox) of what looked like a Pathmark store, so those drugstore only ones may have spread a bit further than the actual supermarkets ever did. Speaking of...

Re: 2 Pathmark stores right next to each other?
Looks like they just split the store into two different buildings - probably a lack of one large enough space (which is often an issue in more populous areas). The white fronted section is the supermarket, the brick part is the pharmacy. Not sure what that 2nd photo (the one with all the constructio...

Re: Kmart checkouts over the years
No, it was not the RX symbol. Someone had an example posted. https://imgur.com/gallery/0iXLmZ5 Interesting this receipt says "Payless Drugs NW." Their receipts in CA just said Payless Drug but looked exactly the same. Also the "2830" after Renton, WA would be the store number (w...

Re: Kmart checkouts over the years
I remember the system Payless Drug used- they had scanning before any other drug store had scanning. The receipt came out of a slot right next to the keyboard (keybord and printer and cash drawer were a single unit). The receipt only listed 8 letters for item descriptions. They had an odd TX symbol...
