Re: JCPenney supermarkets
Their first exposure to supermarkets was up in Milwaukee, where they had the Treasury which included supermarkets at some stores. They initially cooperated with Hinky-Dinky out of Omaha which set up Supermarkets Interstate before taking them over. There's some interesting material out there includin...

Re: Nordstrom Stores In Alaska
Don't know, but there is an apocryphal story about Nordstrom (in Alaska) taking back tires on a return with a smile....they never sold tires...except the store where the return took place FORMERLY sold the tires before Nordstrom. Service with a smile.

Re: NEW: Louisville KY, 1922 and 1946-2022
Agree--but H-D seemed to go anywhere anyone would have them...everywhere from Wisconsin with Treasure Island/JCPenney; Rio Grande Valley with Globe/Walgreens (I think), Sioux Falls with National Bellas Hess (!); not either like Colonial (concentrated within their SE footprint) or Meadowdale/Abner Wo...

Re: NEW: Louisville KY, 1922 and 1946-2022
Apparently Hinky-Dinky/Supermarkets Interstate had a couple locations in Louisville in the mid-60s incorporated in a couple of the more esoteric discount stores (Globe/Ontario/Arlans/National Bellas Hess...)...there is some evidence of this within the Hinky-Dinky corporate newsletter archives which ...

Yes, My-T-Fine was their private label. I worked for a market research company in St. Louis who did work for Kraft; don't ask me why I remember but we were doing a survey in Portland/Seattle in about 1981 for Velveeta Singles which were in test market there. Also did one elsewhere in the US for Kraf...

Re: "First" JCPenney Catalog
Wards actually shrank their store base in the '50s...their management was convinced of a post-war depression, so hoarded cash. They expanded in suburban clusters in the early 60s around their mail order warehouses, which resulted them missing other metros entirely (they had a couple catalogue stores...

Re: The oldest Kroger store in operation?
The Grosse Pointe Kroger was entirely renovated a couple years ago (was closed for several weeks) so is completely modern inside...it may or may not be labeled "Fresh Fare" but is certainly to that standard, though in a small footprint. Kroger has a monopoly in that part of town after taki...

Re: Billings, MT Old Store Photos
there's an old-school sporting goods store (mostly team sports, specifically wrestling) in the next suburb that still has their mechanical cash register...they have so little stock except for wrestling gear but it's a fun anachronism.

Re: Billings, MT Old Store Photos
I still remember being surprised that between 1987 and 1989 on a trip to Albuquerque that one of the in-town Marina stores (on a north/south street, FWIW) still had the Sweda mechanical cash registers. At that point, I was traveling widely (mystery shopper for KFC so was literally in suburbia from c...
