Re: Kroger U-Save Foods?
Update: Looks like U-$ave foods started as an independent who remodeled the location from a Bestway concept, per the local newspaper. The store was acquired by Kroger in 1995 who kept the U-$ave name. Therefore I am doubtful that it was expanded beyond Whitley City. I am also not able to confirm if ...

Re: Kroger U-Save Foods?
Don't know much either, but given the age of the building/sign I could reasonably say said concept stems from before the acquisition of JayC in 1999 (and founding of Ruler Foods a year prior by said company). Looks like the facade was remodeled before 2011 ( https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/kroger-wh...

Re: Kroger in Lafayette LA
Lafayette was on a different contract even than Opelousas 18 miles north. The two Lafayette Kroger stores closed in 1988 along with New Iberia and Morgan City. All four were purchased by National/Canal Villere. Arnould Blvd. immediately ceased being a supermarket. Willow at Evangeline Thruway held ...

Re: Kroger in Lafayette LA
I collected these from an 1983 ad. It's possible one more was built before pull-out in I believe 1985 but it's unlikely. http://www.groceteria.com/board/viewtopic.php?p=20628#p20628 https://www.upi.com/Archives/1983/11/22/An-Ohio-based-grocery-store-chain-closed-six-of-its/7446438325200/ Kroger lef...

Re: NEW: Hamilton/Fairfield OH, 1925-2020
Not 100% sure I understand your question the way it’s phrased, but if you’re referring to the Toledo spreadsheet, there is an A&P listed at 2767 (1966-1975) and a Kroger listed at 2070 (1951-1965). Are you saying the Kroger occupied the A&P space at some point before or after? That location...

Re: NEW: Hamilton/Fairfield OH, 1925-2020
A little more checking: the Front Street location was indeed a Kroger/SuperX combo that opened in 1971 and closed ca. 1974. It was repurposed into the current criminal justice building starting in 1975 (that opened in 1977). It's the rare store that opened and closed between two snapshots. Kroger d...

Re: NEW: Hamilton/Fairfield OH, 1925-2020
No idea. There weren't listings for them in the years I surveyed. Do you have dates, maybe? https://www.comapps.ohio.gov/liqr/liqr_apps/PermitLookup/PermitHolder.aspx The listings (both store #337) have no date affixed to them, but for the most part said website has permits dating back to stores wh...

Re: NEW: Hamilton/Fairfield OH, 1925-2020
On the Ohio Liquor board website, I saw two Kroger sites that weren't listed here (331 S Front, 201 B St). What's the scoop on those?

Unfortunately you need a subscription to the "Times Machine" ...but maybe someone was able to log on somehow and attach a copy of the article for fair use purposes. 2022-11-30 23_03_41-TimesMachine_ August 24, 1930 - NYTimes.com - Brave.png Thank you. I do wonder if the previous grocery d...

Re: Sears store-within-a-stores over the years
There's an article in the New York Times that talks about the Kroger/Sears collaboration. I do know that for many years, Hillman's Pure Foods operated in some Chicagoland-area Sears. In 2017 I made a thread on it , but alas, no replies. One common thread between the garden center and the coffee sho...

Re: Sears store-within-a-stores over the years
There was the partnership Sears did with Kmart in 2018, and Kroger also had stores inside a number of Sears back in the 1930s. Well, those are on two sides of the spectrum! Post-Lampert Sears didn't do much in terms of localized shops. They had an Edwin Watts Golf Shops and of course that mini-Kmar...

Re: Ukrops expansion to Roanoke, VA and Fredericksburg, VA
You are correct about Ukrops having to compete with Giant-MD and Safeway in Richmond and Giant-MD in Fredericksburg. My thinking was more along the lines of if Ukrops continued north of Fredericksburg they would be attempting to compete with Giant on its home turf. Giant had and still has a much la...

Re: Ukrops expansion to Roanoke, VA and Fredericksburg, VA
Interesting take, but I think that by the time H-T was in any position to enter either of these markets, the Harris and Teeter families had long since ceased to be part of the equation and may have been related to the company only through potential ownership of some Ruddick Corp. stock after 1969. ...

Re: Ukrops expansion to Roanoke, VA and Fredericksburg, VA
I'm curious about Ukrops motives behind their expansions to Roanoke, VA and Fredericksburg, VA. I'm thinking that the expansion to Fredericksburg would have put them in reach of the Washington, DC area if they had stayed independent and wanted to continue north. That would have put Ukrops on a coll...
